DAILY PAGES PRACTICE

Who else needs a coping mechanism right now? Who else needs to feel productive? Who else needs a place to vent??

Thank goodness for Daily Pages, our old friend!

How’s your writing habit going? Has it fallen away? Become stronger? Not a thing yet? Daily Pages is a wonderful, helpful journaling process that has served many writers and creatives at all different levels of writing experience.

Borrowed from Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages (featured practice in The Artist’s Way), Daily Pages is a commitment to writing three pages by hand every day, without predetermined theme or content; you write what comes up for you.

It can be challenging to get into the habit, let alone see its value for the first several days, but by about day 12 amazing things begin to happen, if you’ve been dedicating time and attention to it. I call them Daily Pages because you can write them at a time of day or night that works for you.

That said, it is important that you either write at the same time every day (if you’re a clock watcher) or at the same point in your routine every day (if you had a falling out with a clock in the past and just CANNOT with clocks anymore).

Newbies to the habit, this patterning is crucial. It’s how you bring writing from the back burner to the front of your mind so it features as part of your life.

Members who have experience with Daily Pages are the only ones allowed to jump around and write at different times on different days, so look at your schedule now and choose a block of 30-45 minutes that will work for you.

You can do this on your own or join our Daily Pages check-in group at 9 a.m. on Zoom every morning. For information, email info@toliveandwrite.org. To participate, join To Live and Write in Alameda on Facebook.

I cannot overemphasize how powerful and life-affirming this habit can be if you give it a chance. I have been doing it for over a decade, and I have clients who have been doing it for three and four years — we all swear by it. I use cheap pens and college-rule single subject notebooks that I pick up for 59c at back-to-school sales. Others I know use handmade journals, high-end journals, and even high-tech journals.

This is your habit, your ritual, to develop.
